Using CAN232 Converter to Realize Intelligent Data Conversion of RS232CAN Network

 

RS232 communication distance is short (according to EAT/TAI-232 standard, only 15 meters), only point-to-point communication can be carried out, and multi-point communication network cannot be directly formed.

 

In order to extend the communication distance of RS232 and form a communication network with RS232 nodes, RS232/RS485 signal converters are widely used at present.

 

However, due to the limitations of RS485 communication itself, there are many deficiencies in practical applications: low bus efficiency, poor system real-time performance, low communication reliability, complex network engineering debugging, unsatisfactory transmission distance, and few nodes that can be connected to a single bus , the application is not flexible, etc.

 

This article introduces a method, which can convert RS232 communication network into CAN communication network, so as to better solve the problem of users establishing long-distance communication network.

 

CAN bus characteristics

 


CAN-bus (Controller Area Network), CAN-bus is one of the most widely used field bus international standards.

 


CAN-bus is a multi-master serial communication bus, which can achieve high communication rate, high resistance to electromagnetic interference, and can detect any errors generated to ensure the reliability of real-time communication.

 


CAN-bus has the following characteristics:

 

1: Low-cost field bus;

 

2: Very high bus utilization;

 

3: Very long data transmission distance (up to 10Km) or high-speed data transmission rate (up to 1Mbps);

 

4: The message can be received or blocked according to the ID of the message;

 

5: Reliable error handling and error detection mechanism; after the information sent is damaged, it can be automatically retransmitted;

 

6: The node has the function of automatically exiting the bus when the error is serious;

 


When the signal transmission distance reaches 5Km, CAN-bus can still provide a data transmission rate of up to 10Kbps.

 

Using CAN232B converter to realize the intelligent data conversion of RS232/CAN network

 

CAN232 converter

 

We can use CAN232 converter to realize multi-point networking and remote communication of RS232.

 

CAN232 converter has built-in data processing microcontroller and CAN controller, which can realize intelligent data conversion of RS232/CAN network.

 

The main technical parameters

 

1: Support CAN2.0B protocol (compatible with CAN2.0A protocol), in line with ISO/DIS 11898 specification;

 

2: Integrate 1 CAN channel, the baud rate is optional between 10Kbps ~ 1Mbps;

 

3: Integrate 1 RS232 channel, the baud rate is optional between 1200bps and 57600bps;

 

4: CAN channel adopts photoelectric isolation, isolation module insulation voltage: 1000Vrms.

 


Working principle

The microprocessor is responsible for realizing the communication protocol, converting RS232 communication data and CAN communication data; integrating the CAN controller to complete the hardware realization of the CAN protocol.

 

In order to improve the anti-interference ability of the system, a complete electrical isolation circuit is added to the CAN data channel. The isolation circuit adopts photoelectric isolation components, and comes with DC/DC power module, no external power supply is required.

 

When the communication distance is long, a 120-ohm resistor needs to be installed at each of the two endpoints of the CAN network, and the resistors are connected across CAN_H and CAN_L.

 

Since the CAN232B converter fully supports the CAN2.0A and CAN2.0B protocols, the use of CAN232B to realize the point-to-point remote communication of RS232 can make full use of the advantages of the CAN bus, such as long transmission distance, high transmission rate, lossless arbitration and error detection processing.

 

When the CAN baud rate is 10kbps, the data transmission distance can reach 5km, which greatly improves the transmission distance of RS232 data and also greatly improves the reliability of RS232 data transmission.

 

If the user's data transmission distance exceeds 5km, a CANrep repeater needs to be installed in the middle of the CAN network.

 


Using CAN232B converter to realize the intelligent data conversion of RS232/CAN network

 

Use CAN232B converter to realize RS232 multi-computer communication network, as shown in Figure 4-2. Note that the CAN network is a "straight" network. First, each user equipment needs to be connected to a CAN232B converter; then, the CAN ports of each CAN232B converter are connected through twisted pairs to communicate. In addition, a 120-ohm resistor needs to be installed at each of the two endpoints of the CAN network, and the resistors are connected across CAN_H and CAN_L.

 

If the user's data transmission distance exceeds 5km, a CANrep repeater needs to be installed in the middle of the CAN network.


 
Reasonable use of CAN232B converter can easily realize RS232 multi-point networking and remote communication.

 

Since the CAN232B converter fully supports the CAN2.0A and CAN2.0B protocols, the established CAN control network has the advantages of flexible networking, high data transmission reliability, high communication rate, and high bus utilization.

 

RS232/CAN level converter

 

At present, we have also come into contact with a RS232/CAN converter that uses the level drive capability of the CAN bus transceiver to indirectly realize the RS232 remote communication.

 

Here, we call it a non-intelligent RS232/CAN level converter, and the microprocessor-equipped product described above is called an intelligent RS232/CAN converter.
