NMEA2000 For Your Boat Engine

Many modern engines are capable of networking via NMEA2000 with most newer chartplotters and multi-function displays so that engine data and fuel flow can be viewed. This caused a lot of confusion.

 

 

Common engine brands that can be networked are Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Evinrude and Suzuki outboards. Common inboards are Cummins, Mercruiser, Volvo and Yanmar.

 

 

First, we'll touch on the outboard. There are 3 brands that are easy to network with. They are Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Evin Rude.

 

 

Honda - All 225 Hondas from 2010 and later, as well as 60 and 250HP Hondas support NMEA2000. They require a Honda NMEA interface cable. This cable connects to a plug inside the engine cowling on one end and then to a NMEA2000 T connector on the other end.

Suzuki - As far as we know, all Suzuki 4-stroke outboards support NMEA2000. In fact, the digital engine gauge package Suzuki uses is based on NMEA2000 and the actual gauges are made by Lowrance. Suzuki engines can be connected to NMEA2000 networks through the Lowrance Engine Interface Module. Until recently we were not able to sell this mod, but now it is only available through authorized Suzuki dealers. It was called EP-20. It will need some kind of Lowrance display or gauge to configure it. In other words, the cable is silent until the Lowrance display can actually configure it and tell it what it is. At that point, the Lowrance display can be removed. The cheapest Lowrance monitor to configure it with is the LMF200.

 

 

Yamaha - Yamaha primarily supported NMEA2000 in 2006. Rumor has it that some pre-2006 models are compatible, but you'll need to search for it on the internet. Yamaha engines are now networked in three different ways, depending on which instrument package you have.
