1.  What is HDBaseT ?


HDBaseT is a high-definition digital display interface, that is, an integrated connection between a high-definition video source and a remote display through a 100m/328ft CAT5e/6 cable, providing uncompressed high-definition 4k video, audio, Ethernet, control signal and up to 100 watts of power.


It is a data transmission technology developed by the home appliance manufacturers Sony, LG, Samsung from Japan and South Korea and an alliance of semiconductor companies in Israel. It passed Intel's HDCP certification in 2009. At the end of June 2010, the official specification of HDBaseT 1.0 was determined.


HDBaseT does not redesign a new interface like HDMI and Display Port, but adopts the 8P8C (RJ45) interface that is familiar to the public, commonly known as crystal head or Ethernet interface. The transmission medium adopts the network cable that we are very easy to obtain and familiar with. In addition to providing video signal transmission functions, the HDBaseT standard also has network connectivity and Power over Ethernet (POE) functions. Therefore, HDBaseT technology is a transmission technology that can complete multiple functions with only one wire.


Second, the role of the HDBaseT interface  ?   Difference from HDMI


Usually to do video transmission, we have to get all kinds of video signals, USB signals, hdmi cables, power cables, etc., which is a headache, and the wiring is getting more and more complicated!

How to make one line carry all these signals ?


HDBaseT technology solves this problem with a single network cable.


1. The shortcomings of HDMI make HDBaseT


HDMI only transmits audio and video signals, and the distance is also limited in length. The quality of the HDMI signal of a good brand can only be maintained at about 30 meters, and the price of the wire is too high for most users. Although there are some other wireless technologies as an alternative to HDMI. But their biggest problem is that there is no power transmission channel, and the transmission rate is difficult to break through.


In addition, the HDMI Alliance requires fees to join, and the use of this agreement also requires authorization fees. Therefore, the HDBaseT Alliance composed of Sony, Samsung, LG and Valence Semiconductor has developed the HDBaseT solution, which solves the above problems well. From a certain perspective, HDBaseT can also be seen as a product of manufacturers fighting against the HDMI alliance.


2. The role and implementation of HDBaseT



HDBaseT is a standard based on network transmission, which can integrate audio, video, network, control signals and power supply lines, and use ordinary network cables as transmission cables for transmission.


HDBaseT implements user requirements with the simplest and lowest cost solution. So the wire does not need to be specially made. HDBaseT uses the current Cat5e/6 network cable as the screen signal line, which can not only transmit images and voices, but also retain the function of the network cable itself. There is no doubt that the cost of HDBaseT is much lower than HDMI, which requires additional connectors and cables. HDBaseT will directly use the existing network cable connector, and the cable directly supports the common RJ45 network cable.


3. Advantages of HDBaseT :


1. The general transmission distance of HDMI cables is only about 30 meters, which greatly limits the use range of high-definition devices, while the transmission distance of HDBaseT can reach 100 meters.


2. HDMI cables are expensive, while HDBaseT uses cheap and easily available CAT5/6 Ethernet cables as the transmission medium.


3. HDMI is a closed standard, and manufacturers need to pay a certain license fee for using the HDMI interface, while HDBaseT is an open standard and does not need to pay additional fees.


4. The HDBaseT standard currently supports a transmission rate of 20Gb/s, which is 4 times the HDMI transmission rate of 5Gb/s, and can fully meet all uncompressed 1080p or clearer 4Kx2K video transmissions.


3. Application of HDBaseT


Many high-definition cameras also have HDBaseT functions, which are suitable for PTZ high-definition color cameras in the fields of recording and broadcasting teaching, remote conferences, cloud conferences, online classes, surgical teaching, court trials, enterprise and telemedicine applications.
