What are Cell Phone Towers?

Cell towers, also known as cellular base stations, are places where electronic communication equipment and antennas are installed to allow wireless communication equipment such as phones and radios to be used in the surrounding area.

Cell towers are usually built by tower companies or wireless carriers when expanding network coverage or capacity to provide better reception in the area. Cell phone towers are basically all over the United States, although some cities have more of them than others.



There are currently more than 307,000 cell towers in the United States. They can sometimes be spotted on top of buildings. Other times, cities need cell towers to blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. Rural areas sometimes hide them in treescapes, disguised as a tree.



How Do Cell Towers Work?



More than 300 million cell phones are in use in the United States every day. Whenever a cell phone is used, it emits electromagnetic radio waves called radio frequencies, which are picked up by the antenna of the nearest cell phone tower.



Once the cell tower receives that signal, it transmits the signal to a switching center. This allows the call to be connected to another mobile phone or the phone network. It's crazy to think that all of this happened in just a few seconds.
