What is Marine radar and why it is so important?

Marine radar is an X-band or S-band radar installed on a ship, which is used to detect other ships and land obstacles, and provide azimuth and distance for avoiding collisions and navigation at sea. It is an electronic navigation instrument. The main principle is: use a rotating antenna to sweep a narrow beam of microwave across the water surface around the ship to the horizon, detect the target through the microwave reflected by the target, and generate an image of the surrounding environment of the ship on the display screen.

Radar is an essential navigation component for ensuring safety at sea and near shore. A captain needs to be able to maneuver a vessel in the harshest conditions and be able to navigate in weather with little or no visibility. Radar is rarely used alone in marine environments. Typically the radar is integrated with other navigation displays on a single display, which has the advantage of convenience and the distraction of viewing multiple different screens at the same time. Therefore, the display can usually overlay the electronic GPS navigation chart and sonar display of the ship's position on the radar display. This provides a combined view of the surrounding environment for easy maneuvering of the vessel.



In merchant ships, radar is integrated into a suite of marine instruments including chartplotters, sonar, two-way marine radios, satellite navigation (GNSS) receivers such as GPS, and SARTs. Exchanging data via a digital data bus, these devices came a long way in the early 2000s. For example, some have 3D displays that allow the navigator to see above, below and around the ship, including an overlay of satellite imagery.



Now, most digital radars use Ethernet cables, and the connectors vary from model to model. In particular, many of them have traditional RJ45 connectors like you'll find in many office PC networks.
