How to choose Marine monitoring and control system cable?

How do I know which control cable I need?


First of all, you need to know what kind of control cables are on your boat? This boat has a [BRAND NAME] engine. There are several ways to determine this information by noting the following:


1 Cable Appearance

2 Cable part number

3 What brand(s) of engine and control head are.


OEM type cables have special end fittings designed to connect to the controller and engine with minimal hardware. In general, all other motors and controllers use the common Type 3300/33C control cables. Universal cables have 10-32 threaded ends and usually require additional hardware to connect to the engine and controller.

A. If you do a first-time control cable installation


Outboard: Measure from controller to center of outboard along unobstructed cable routing. Two feet are added to allow for circulation that provides unrestricted engine movement. Round up to the next full foot and order that length of cable. Stern Drives and Inboards: Take measurements along unobstructed cable routing from controls to shift and/or throttle connections. Round up this dimension to the next full foot and order that length of cable


B. If you need to replace an existing cable.


Measure the existing cable as follows: Measure the cable in inches from tip to tip and round up to the next even foot. Order this length of cable.

What kind of ongoing maintenance does the cable need?


Can they be repaired? We recommend performing the following scheduled maintenance at least twice a quarter:


Check overall operation for proper gear engagement, full and idle throttle, and overall feel.

Visually inspect control heads, cables, and connection points of engine and drive cables for tight fasteners, correct operation of all moving parts, worn or damaged items, frayed or misaligned cables, etc.

Do not lubricate the core wire (the moving wire inside the casing). If the cable is running stiff, replace it.

Keep the cable ends free of dirt and corrosion.
