What is the difference between asynchronous and synchronous serial?

Synchronous and asynchronous transmissions are two different methods of transmission synchronization. Synchronous transmissions are synchronized by an external clock, while asynchronous transmissions are synchronized by special signals along the transmission medium.

 

 

In the async method

 

 

This is also serial communication, but the data transfer is not supported by any external clock signal, in other words, you don't need a clock to communicate with other devices. For example, UART, RS232, etc. are all asynchronous serial communication methods.

In the synchronization method

 

 

A synchronous serial interface always pairs its data lines with a clock signal, and all devices on the synchronous serial bus share a common clock. This makes serial transfers more direct and faster, but it also requires at least one extra wire between communicating devices.
