How does a 2 way coaxial splitter work?

Coaxial cable splitters are used in video transmission systems to take a single video source and branch it out to multiple locations. Coax splitters typically come in 2, 3, 4 and 6-way configurations. Ideally, a coax splitter maintains the proper impedance environment at the input and output ports. For video coaxial systems, this impedance is typically 75 ohms. As the name implies, a coaxial signal splitter takes the power on the input port and distributes it equally to the output port. For example, a 2-way splitter has 1 input port and 2 output ports. It sends half the power of the input signal to one of the output ports. The other half is sent to another output port.

Is there a difference in the quality of the coax splitters?


Not all coax splitters are created equal. Low-quality coaxial cable splitters can adversely affect the video signal, causing excessive signal attenuation (signal loss) and multiple reflections that can cause ghost images. Low quality splitters have a single ferrite that attempts to control the impedance of the splitter. This often does not produce a good broadband impedance match and leads to unwanted reflections and signal loss. A high-quality splitter has a printed circuit with multiple components to ensure splitter performance over a wide frequency range (preferred).
